In An African American Community of Hope, Zenda:  1896-1930, Nancy Bondurant Jones discloses the details of a story that in reality should have been told decades ago.  In earlier times those who witnessed firsthand the successes and travails of the newly freed slave would have made the telling much simpler.  Mrs. Jones spent months searching out the details of Zenda, an emerging, free-black community nestled among the western foothills of the Massanutten Mountain that divides the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
