The Spitzers were originally a family of noble knights dating back to Baron Hedmar von Spitzer.  Johann Heinrich Spitzer was born in the Wachau region of Austria of a family originally Jewish Ostrogoths.  He and his brother John Andrew Spitzer arrived in Philadelphia in 1764.

Franklin Alexander Spitzer (1858-1936), a son of Alexander Spitzer and Susan Smith, married Lydia Jones (1864-1936), a daughter of Thomas Jones and Leannah Ryman, in 1883. They had twelve children.
