Rare ca. 1775 Joannes Volpato print

This rare, museum-quality print was part of a series of engravings commissioned in the 1770s by Pope Pious VI. It follows Raphael Santivs (b. 1483, Urbino; d. 1520, Rome)“pinx in Aedibus Vaticanus.”

This series of prints documented the works of the Renaissance masters which adorn various chapels in Rome. Joannes Volpato, (1735-1803), the Vatican’s master engraver from Bassano, was renowned for his expertise in capturing the sublime detail of his original subjects, and his work was highly sought after by Popes and collectors.

Similar prints, unframed, have sold for 400-600 dollars.

This piece of history is in fair condition, some aging foxing and tears. Should be remounted inside the beautiful gold-painted frame, which is in good condition. Has been trimmed, formerly from a museum collection.

Print is trimmed to about 23x30”, with gilded wood frame and museum glass.

Asking $200, includes fragile shipping; If picking up in person at Rocktown History, Dayton, Virginia, will sell for $90 -- be sure to call the manager (Andrea Early) 540-879-2681 to discuss or with any questions.
