The Journal of the Shenandoah Valley During the Civil War Era is published annually by Shenandoah University's McCormick Civil War Institute. The Journal's goal is to provide fresh perspectives on seldom-studied aspects of the Civil War era in one of the most oft-contested regions during the Civil War--Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The Journal examines the Civil War era broadly and examines aspects of memory, social, military, and political history. This particular volume consists of a historians' roundtable featuring perspectives from historians Edward L. Ayers, Brandon H. Beck, Jonathan M. Berkey, Eric A. Campbell, Dennis E. Frye, Gary W. Gallagher, Caroline E. Janney, Scott C. Patchan, Kathryn J. Shively, and Nancy T. Sorrells. Additionally, volume 5 includes the edited diary of Private George E. Young, 18th Connecticut; an essay by Dale Harter focused on Emma Lyon Bryan; and a contribution by Robert Grandchamp examining the service and death of W.H. Lewis at the Battle of Cedar Creek.
